The 1950'S


Rock and Roll birth.With artist like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, etc.,brought The fifties rythym and blues, country and gospel together to form Rock 'n Roll, Doo Wop, Rockabilly and the beginnings of Soul.

The 1960's

The sixties rock and roll,brings surf music, folk music, Motown, Stax, the British Invasion, psychedelic, hard rock and heavy metal. Groups like the Supremes, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Grateful Dead,Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin and solo artists Dick Dale, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix make their marks.

In the seventies,albums have become more important than the singles. Concerts have moved from clubs and halls, to stadiums. Heavy metal, folk rock, progressive rock, funk and glitter rock, are followed by disco and punk rock.  Major artist will include Yes, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, T.Rex, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, James Taylor, Carole King, Kiss, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, The Bee Gees, Chic, Donna Summer, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Clash.

The 1980's

In the eighties, CD's replace albums and tapes. Music videos, MTV are now the major influence.
The artists include U2, Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, The Go'Go's, Human League, Flock of Seagulls, INXS, Journey,  Foreigner, Guns & Roses, and Motley Crue. New music styles such as synthpop, new wave, hardcore, speed metal, hair metal, the new british invasion, and rap come to the forefront.

1990's

The nineties brought us grunge, alternative, industrial, house, hip hop, techno and trance.Such artist as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Blues Traveler, Phish, Beck sell side by side with Whitney Houston, En Vogue, NSYNC, TLC, Maria Carey and Britney Spears.
